“Drei Reiter Am Thor”
Description
"Es ritten drei Reitter zum Tore hinaus, Ade! Fein's liebchen schaute zum Fenster heras, Ade!" Tune in 6/8. Translates roughly as "three riders from Tore" and seems to be an all purpose love song.
Notes
Colcord says this is a German folksong dating from the 16th century. It was included in "Songs of American Sailormen" as an example of how its tune ended up being used for an entirely different English shanty, "Slav Ho!" I found another source which listed the title as "Es ritten drei Reiter zum Tor hinaus" and gave a date of 1777. - SL
