"Tell me, daddy, tell me, why the men in yonder crowd, Can you tell me why they are marching...?" The father tells his son that they are marching because they are proud of American freedom; both his grandfathers died fighting for it

A;though it seems certain that this hearkens back to the American Civil War (there was no other war in American history where the odds are significant that both of a child's grandparents would have died), I have been unable to find out anything more about the song. - RBW
